In the Spotlight: The Sandy Duck, Falmouth (Cornwall, England)

Falmouth Bay

Freyja Ducker’s enchanting seven-room B&B is the place you love to have booked, the place you enjoy being a guest, and the place you hate to leave.

The Sandy Duck is set on a hill overlooking Falmouth bay (a short stroll to town, beaches, and train station) on the South coast of Cornwall, perfect to be used as base for further exploration.

Freyja herself welcomed us upon arrival and showed us around. The Edwardian townhouse was originally built in 1899 to lodge revenue officers. It was afterwards sold and has been used as B&B since then. Combining Scandinavian design with well-selected furnishings and artwork, she has been able to create a beautiful, contemporary, homey atmosphere.

Our friends got Room 4 (1st floor), and we stayed in Room 7 (2nd floor), both with cushioned, dormer window seats that allowed lots of natural light and perfect spots to admire the serene bay views—binoculars are provided …

We loved the rooms, totally comfortable and cozy, and the Meraki toiletries felt like a special  treat.

The in-room tea/coffee tray is worth mentioning. It includes a tea selection of Joe’s Tea Co and coffee bags of New Kings Coffee, incl. a Peruvian decaf! All organic. It was something new for us to make coffee using coffee bags; it was easy (same procedure as with tea bags) and delicious. We enjoyed every cup indulging in crunchy cookies that appeared every day on the tray.

The idea of having the fresh milk for tea/coffee in a thermos is great … and sustainable.

If I was more than happy with the BEDroom in this superb B&B, I was also delighted with the BREAKFAST, served in the inviting dining room from 8-10 am.

These were some of the choices:

The wholesome breakfast is sourced as much as possible from local suppliers; preserves, granolas, and mueslis are homemade.

The cooked breakfasts are freshly made to order.  As you can see, we tried all the options and created our own.  The pictures speak by themselves:

The morning smiles of the friendly staff laying on the breakfast completed the package for a perfect start of the day.

Freyja opened The Sandy Duck in 2017 and all her efforts are paying; in such a short time, her B&B is considered among the top British hotels. You can tell she is a perfectionist, running the business with care and attention into detail. As a guest you are truly pampered and can enjoy the relaxed vibe, being reminded that you are on holidays.

One morning we had to leave for a day trip at 6 am.  Freyja kindly left for us an early breakfast, adding a note “Have a fun trip today :-)”  Do I need to say more about genuine hospitality?

Note:   Free parking.  No elevator, but Bedroom 1 is on the ground floor.
